Unable to start GUI screen in Ubuntu 11.10

Scenario: After doing update when you restart Ubuntu, the default GUI screen (login screen) not appears. It hangs in “starting sensor daemon sensord”. I can able to login through CLI by using the key Ctrl+Alt+F1. If I run startx the GUI screen displayed.

Root cause: There will be two reasons that the default GUI not occurs.

  1. If you change the runlevel in /etc/init/rc-sysinit.conf. The default run level is 2, if you changed to some other number it works according to the runlevel.
  2. The second reason will be lightdm app, where it requires reconfiguration to bring back Ubuntu to GUI (login screen) after booting.

Solution: To reconfigure lightdm please do the following

  1. Press CTRL+F1
  2. Login
  3. Type “sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm” and choose the lightdm
  4. reboot
