To enable SNMP service for ESX server 5.0


Scenario :

To enable SNMP service for ESX server 5.0 for monitoring the performance, through 3rd party applications.

Solutions:

Step 1: In your Vcenter server the Vmware Vsphere Cli should be installed. This helps to execute ESX commands.

Step 2: Go to Vsphere CLI command prompt and check the SNMP option by entering the command

C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware vSphere CLI\bin>vicfg-snmp.pl –server  hostname or IP  –username root –password  password  –show

Current SNMP agent settings:

Enabled  : 0

UDP port : 161

Communities :

Notification targets :

Options :

EnvEventSource=indications

C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware vSphere CLI\bin>

If the enable option is 0 SNMP is not enabled. To enable SNMP on ESX server  enter the command

C:\programfiles(x86)\vmware\vmware vsphere cli\bin>vicfg-snmp.pl --server hostname --username username --password password --enable (or) –disable

After enabling the snmp, the option will be Enabled : 1 in Current SNMP agent settings.
